Artistic Director, Professional Actor, Writer, Census Taker of Life!
I am very passionate about giving back something to the place where I was born, especially if I am given an opportunity to train and acquire skills from one of the best institutions in its field (RADA). So I decided to let go of my Acting career in the UK, and help develop and raise the standards in the Acting industry here in Ghana. The Academy is the first step (of many to come) to achieving this vision; a school in Ghana which will be at an international level and standard in all areas of its work. I set up the school in February 2009 to cater for the amount of natural talent in Ghana who have no vocational training school to seriously nurture and expand that talent, giving it a platform to exhibit it in a fully creative form. The school aims to help enrich the community by training local Ghanaians to use Acting as a tool for all walks of life, be it for confidence in the work place, or any other social situations. We will be equipping our students with an invaluable acting training at a reasonable cost. Part of our ethos is to provide a public service for the betterment of society. The aim of The Academy is to equip it's students with all the tools needed to sustain a career as Professional Actors in the industry, with an emphasis on studying a broad spectrum of cultural art forms in Africa and around the globe, to analyse work from our own, and other cultures, and producing work from our own, and other cultures. This is to further enrich and enlighten the students to the vast array of rich stories to be told not just in Ghana, or Africa, but around the globe. Thus we educate ourselves about the world we live in, through the medium of theatre, film, radio, and all other art forms. We believe this will broaden the student’s mind, and will be of benefit to them both personally, and in the industry. On top of studying and producing work from our own culture, the students will also learn about the English speaking, contemporary and classical theatre to further broaden their artistic knowledge. We also have within our academy ‘The K. Boateng Youth Theatre’. The youth theatre runs its programmes annually between June and August. It is a course aimed at young people between 14-27 years of age. We think this course is of utmost importance to the young people in our society today, as it gives them an opportunity to air their thoughts, problems, ideas, etc and for us to creatively turn it into a performance. We think this will educate and inform the whole of society as to the plight of our youth today. Also the course is a great tool for giving confidence, self- esteem, and self- belief to young people to carry on in life with those skills already learnt and inbuilt in them. So we believe at the Academy that Drama is indeed essential to human progress and is a vital tool for social interaction, problem solving, and indeed every aspect of life. The Youth Theatre course lasts for three weeks. After the 3 weeks, the students gain a certificate, making them a member of the youth theatre, and are then eligible to re-audition for our full scale production the following year. The productions may be staged at schools, art centres, or the National Theatre in Ghana. When the students re-audition for the following year, and are successful in gaining a part in our productions, they do not have to pay anything to be on the course. We believe in inclusivity, and so we try our best to give opportunities to talented people who are financially stunted. We hope to be in a position in the future to be able to offer scholarships, grants, and funding to students of exceptional talent, who have a hard financial background. Some of the Youth Theatre lessons include: • Acting • Movement • Singing • Dancing • Improvisation • Story Telling • Theatre Games Application is accepted from all young people between the ages of 14-27 from all over Ghana. If you are interested in applying for the 3 Week Acting Course please visit our website or get in contact with the Academy via the contact provided; The Academy hopes to expand in the near future so that it caters for all aspects of the performing arts, resulting in being able to train talents for singing, dancing, writing, directing, theatre technical arts courses, film acting and much more. We are also currently establishing a Theatre in Education Programme (T.I.E) which we plan to take into schools in the communities in Ghana, and hopefully in the future if funding and donations come through, we aspire to implement it through all the schools in Ghana. We believe this programme will be a very effective way of getting across to the students, very important and serious topics concerning young people, in a very immediate and entertaining way. We think it would benefit the children, the schools, and society in general. We would be looking at topics such as teenage pregnancy, hygiene, bullying, child abuse, safety in society, and much more.
